My Visit to the Technisches Museum (Vienna Museum of Science and Technology)
A Hidden Gem of Engineering and Technology in the Heart of Europe…
One of the highlights of the Technisches Museum Vienna is the opportunity to actively engage with science and technology rather than simply observing exhibits behind glass. Throughout the museum, visitors can explore interactive displays that explain the principles of electricity, mechanics, energy, communication and transportation in a practical and engaging way. From operating mechanical systems and experimenting with scientific concepts to discovering the evolution of aviation, railway engineering and industrial technology, every exhibition encourages curiosity and hands-on learning.
During the Summer of 2025, we had the valuable opportunity to experience a wide range of interactive exhibitions, discover fascinating engineering achievements, and gain a deeper understanding of how technology has evolved through time. From electricity and energy to transportation, communication and industrial innovation, the museum provided us with an unforgettable learning experience while highlighting the creativity, knowledge and determination behind many of the technologies we use in our everyday lives.
That visit reminded me why I fell in love with engineering in the first place, and particularly the fascinating field of electrical engineering. Walking through the halls of the Technisches Museum Vienna brought back memories of my childhood, when I was always curious about how things worked and fascinated by the machines, electrical devices and technologies that surrounded us in everyday life. I remember spending time observing different mechanisms, asking questions about why something moved, how electricity could make things function, and what ideas were hidden behind every invention. My curiosity was not only about the objects themselves, but also about the creativity, knowledge and problem-solving mindset that allowed engineers and scientists to transform ideas into reality.

Visiting museums like the Technisches Museum Vienna is a powerful reminder that every great technological achievement begins with a simple question: “How does this work?”

For an electrical engineer, the lamp’s history shows how electricity transformed civilisation—from a quest for artificial light to a technology that reshaped homes, industry and daily life.
I always found the traditional definition of engineering practice to be quite stifling and limiting. I wasn’t truly content doing just one thing. Of course, I loved electrical consulting deeply and passionately, but I also felt a strong desire to pursue writing and academic teaching, engage in delivering seminars and classes to other fellow engineers and electricians, explore book publishing, lighting design, and even some ideas in interior design. Is this new view of a creative life perfect? Not at all. However, through ongoing experimentation and exploration, I've come closer to my childhood vision of a fulfilling life.
